First Look – Missoni for Target collaboration!

Target is a bargain store with branches all over America, which from time to time, hooks up with someone big from the world of fashion for a cut-price collab. The last one we remember clearly was with Rodarte; the one where they got blogger Tavi to make a little video for them waxing on about the joys of crochet. This time they’ve excelled themselves once more and secured the services of Italian knitters supreme, Missoni.
Oooh – that’s sounds ace. To be honest, Missioni have such a distinctive visual trademark that we’ve seen many a zig-zaggy high street homage to them in the past, (and you can ALWAYS tell the difference) so we very much hope that having the real designers on board, they are able to really go for the design aspects, in cheaper fabrics but keep the aesthetic going as much as possible.

And now, thanks to a cunning leak we found on the blog High Snobette of the shoot for the range, we can all have a jolly good gander. Let’s see. There are two outfits visible, including a zig-zag-tastic roller suitcase. The zig zags look very clean and graphic, with a good colour palette – that is to say that blend of muted/muddy and vivid colours, and - are those splashes of neon we can see? yikes!

Like all good collaborations, this would appear, from these pictures at least, to be a sort of ‘greatest hits’ version of Missoni – their current collections, designed by Missonis one generation removed from Rosita and Ottavio – who started the company in 1953 have moved on a bit and developed beyond the colourful stripes. Nowadays they might use the odd jagged line, but their knitting techniques have evolved beyond that and plenty of their pieces aren’t even knitted at all.

Fabness. The bad news is there are no Target shops in the UK – although it’s very much likely that a certain internet auction site will pick some up so maybe we’ll get our mitts on it after all . . . .?
