Miss World attends 2011 Indonesia Final

Alexandria Mills crowns winner Astrid Ellena

Miss World Alexandria Mills was the special guest of the 2011 Indonesia Final held at the Central Park Ballroom in Jakarta on Friday 3rd June. Thirty-three contestants took part, but it was Astrid Ellena, 20, from East Java who took the title, crowned by Miss World and Indonesia 2010 Asyifa Latief. Fluent in English, Chinese and Spanish, Astrid was joined in the top three by Nadya Siddiqa of Banten, and Amanda Roberta of West Papua. Astrid will now represent Indonesia at the 61st Miss World Final, to be held in London on November 6th.

Earlier, Alexandria was also a guest on RCTI music TV show Dahsyat, and joined the finalists the day after the final at a farewell lunch before heading to Bali for the remainder of the Indonesia visit.

Miss World Alexandria Mills arrived in Indonesia today as a special guest for the 2011 Indonesia final, which takes place on Friday 3rd June in Jakarta's Central Park. Thirty-three finalists are competing, but only one can be crowned the winner, who will then go on to represent Indonesia at the 2011 Miss World Final, to be held in London on Sunday November 6th. 

Miss World was met at the airport by Asyifa Latief, Indonesia 2010, and both will be attending a number of events together in the run up to, and after, the final. Asyifa was a fellow contestant of Alexandria at the 60th Miss World Final when it was held in Sanya, China, last year.

Miss World, Mr World, and Miss World Africa in Chicago

Held from 28th April - 1st May, the annual Variety World Conference in Chicago was yet another successful gathering of international representatives of Variety, The Children's Charity, in support of disabled and disadvantaged children across the world. Miss World Alexandria Mills, Mr World Kamal Ibrahim and Miss World Africa Emma Wareus joined Chairman of Miss World Organisation Julia Morley for the Heart Awards and the Humanitarian Awards, as well as the Variety International Children's Fund Summit Luncheon. They also helped with the We Serve the Kids Lunch on Lake Michigan, bringing food and fun to children from schools, organisations, and groups around the Chicago area. 

The Humanitarian Awards Evening was held in the Grand Ballroom of the Palmer House Hotel. The Sir James Carreras Award was presented to Dr. Michel Ilbawi for his dedicated work treating children with heart defects, having performed over 20,000 surgeries in his 25 years practicing as a paediatric heart surgeon. Supermarket chain Hy-Vee CEO Ric Jurgens and his wife Carol were awarded the Catherine Variety Sheridan Award for having raised over $11 million for Variety. The inaugural Jr. Variety Award was given to fifteen-year-old Brittany Bosca, who for nine years has raised money through sno-cone benefits in aid of an annual summer camp for children who are burn survivors, with over $70,000 donated. The Humanitarian Award was given to the Chicago Cubs baseball team, who raise over $1.5 million dollars a year for local organisations and communities, as well as supporting healthcare projects in the Dominican Republic.

After a two year tenure as International President, Julia Morley now becomes Chairman of Variety International.

Miss World and Miss World Africa present awards

The 20th Annual Property Awards Lunch (the PROPs) in aid of Variety, The Children's Charity was held at London's Hilton Park Lane yesterday, with Miss World Alexandria Mills and Miss World Africa Emma Wareus on stage to present the awards to the winners. Recipients and guests included Deputy Mayor of London Richard Barnes and PROPs Ambassador Matt King who, paralysed from the neck down from an injury playing in his first professional rugby match, has since received help and support from the PROPs and Variety.

The event, hosted by comedian and actor Omid Djalili, saw awards presented to individuals and companies in the property industry who have excelled over the past year, while also raising funds for Variety, with over £350,000 raised at this year's event for Variety's Easy Riders Electric Wheelchair Programme. Since their inception in 1992, the PROPS Awards have generated over £6.5 million for the charity, providing over 1700 electric wheelchairs for disabled children and young people throughout the UK.
